At least every month from puberty to after menopause most women go through what is normally called a period and must wear sanitary pads or tampons. For some with financial constraints battle to afford this necessary hygienic aid including school going girls who often opt to be absent from school than to experience the hygienic and social discomfort from being without it.
One person who for the past three years decided to turn things around is Lesego Mathate from Pretoria acting as both the distributor and manufacturer of affordable sanitary pads. Her business is called Nena Sanitary Pads and produces super absorbent, SABS tested, and Proudly South African; confidently normal and maxi sanitary pads with wings and anti-leak flow channels. The sanitary pads are currently available in selected Spar, Ok stores, spazas, independent phamarcies and Nizams Wholesalers. However more entrepreneurs, including social entrepreneurs are being called to be part of the mission either as agents or distributors. Bulk order prices start from R200 for 25 packets of bulk packets with 24 packets each of 10 pads. For agents ordering less than 25 packets of bulk packets, the minimum order price is R220 per one bulk packet of 24 packets of 10 sanitary pads each.
Social entrepreneurs are entrepreneurs involved in NPOs or NGOs where profits from their trading are reinvested into their organizations and the respective community projects.
Further to manufacturing and distributing sanitary pads, Nena Sanitary Pads, being aware that most customers like or follow brands that often add more than monetary value in their lives, also hosts through its social media platforms a regular feature on women’s health and hygiene called Nena Cares, covering topics through interviews with health experts and practitioners on the female reproductive system, menses, fibroids, etc.
