Covid-19 Hero Awards

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The disease was first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, the capital of China’s Hubei province, and has since spread globally, resulting in the ongoing 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the 2019–20 coronavirus outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on 30 January 2020 and a pandemic on 11 March 2020. Local transmission of the disease has occurred in most countries across all six WHO regions.

In South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa declared the COVID-19 outbreak a national state of disaster in terms of the Disaster Management Act.

Across South Africa, people and organizations have offered to help by mobilizing efforts, resources and time to assist in “flattening the curve” and lowering the infection rates by extending help, assistance and support for those seeking medical care and aiding those whose lives have been disrupted by the pandemic.

In light of this, Shireen Ebrahim a Business Woman, Philanthropist and Community activist has initiated the Covid-19 Hero Awards.

The awards are aimed at recognizing and appreciating the TRUE HEROES of our country.

The COVID-19 Hero Awards is dedicated to all those who have made a positive difference in the lives of others and continue to make that difference in serving mankind and putting their own lives at risk whilst sacrificing their family, time and efforts in the path of humanity.

It’s an award to recognize those who dedicate their lives and passionate hearts in selflessly helping others during the Corona Virus pandemic which is experienced worldwide and also a tribute to those whom we lost.

This award will cover Individuals, Organizations, Sponsors and those who contributed in a positive way in impacting others in efforts irrespective of how big or small.

Email your nominations to or join the Covid-19 Hero Awards Facebook Group and nominate the deserving individual or organization.

After the lockdown is eased, formal documentation to nominate individuals will open together with Dates, Venue, etc. Thereafter more information will be released in the Press and on the Facebook Group.
