For many months The Box Shop on the popular Vilakazi Street, Orlando West remained closed even whilst some of its neighbouring businesses in the precinct had opened. Then on Friday, 27 November 2020 marked the day of its re-launch and re-opening with new sponsors, Mutualism, as The Box Shop Think Tank, for the development of small businesses that The Box Shop hosts through incubation on its premises and promotes, creating brand equity for a relatively easier access to markets, and pop-up events it frequently facilitates creating a platform for businesses to promote their products.
To prove proof in their pudding, some local businesses were contractors in their re-launch and refurbishment, interior decoration by Lindi Mdluli, Carpentry by Gywaser of TkZee fame, and PR Communication by J Communications.
Mutualism, which is also a FinTech company, according to Mason, one its Founders and Director is growing its footprint in this sphere of small business development hence its recent corporate partnership with The Box Shop. Before their engagement in Gauteng and Johannesburg they have also been involved in Cape Town.
The formal re-opening party stretched up until Sunday, 6 December 2020.
Mbali Zulu, one the founding directors and partner, mentioned that at The Box Shop, the start-up businesses that sign up with them have access to sponsored working space, wi-fi access and business development coaching. Manufactures and Retailers of clothing, accessories, art, literature, furniture and cosmetics are offered retail space. The incubator also runs an in-house restaurant, a beverages bar, and an on-line radio station.
